Get Involved
Thank you for your desire to Get Involved!
Our biggest needs are for people to share with others about Orphan World Relief and to sponsor some local fund raisers to help us support the children we work with throughout the world. Your ability to get involved and help spread the word and raise money is limited only to your imagination!
Here are some other ideas that might help you:
- Art & Orphans: Find a local art gallery that would be willing to host an evening focused on Orphans... allowing you or someone else to speak about the need; ask people to donate; and raise awareness of orphans worldwide.
- Small Business Owners: Often, small business owners are willing to post information about an organization and even a place for people to put spare change. You'd be responsible for keeping the information current, working with the small business owner, and collecting the contributions periodically.
- Children Helping Children: Think you're too young? Think again! You might be surprised how many great organizations have been started by kids... for example:
Alex's Lemonade Stand - Alexandra "Alex" Scott was the 4 year-old founder of Alex's Lemonade Stand for Pediatric Cancer Research. Two days before her first birthday she was diagnosed with cancer. At the age of four, Alex decided to do something to make that cure more likely. She opened her first lemonade stand in July of 2000 with the idea of donating the proceeds to "her hospital." Each year since, Alex held an annual lemonade stand in her front yard. On August 1, 2004, Alex died peacefully at the age of 8. As word has spread, donations have poured in from around the world, and Alex's Lemonade Stand has already raised over $5 million for pediatric cancer research.
Chores-For-Charity - Ilana Rothbein founded Chores-For-Charity as a way to raise money for FACES (Finding a Cure for Epilepsy and Seizures). Juggling schoolwork, sports, social activities, and part-time work, she found it very difficult to organize a fundraiser. Instead, Ilana decided to donate the money from her babysitting jobs to FACES. Over a year, she donated 45 hours of her time babysitting and $450 of her earnings to FACES. She thought, "Maybe I can get other kids to do the same thing. Since kids are donating their time to contribute their earnings to a charitable organization, it's only fair that those hours be counted as charitable work." She began developing her personal fundraising project into an official program with support from her family and FACES.
Ryan's Well Foundation - At the age of six, Ryan Hrelijac learned that without access to clean water people become ill and sometimes even die. He set out to raise $70 towards building a well in Africa and, having reached his goal in four months, Ryan kept working and organizing. He has now raised over $1,000,000 and his work has helped to change the lives of thousands of people in Africa who might not otherwise have been able to lead healthy, normal lives. Ryan's Well Foundation has come together to continue this important and inspiring work.
